Y on the Fly Hits the Road, Bringing the Y to Neighborhoods Across Syracuse

On July 1, we officially launched Y on the Fly, the YMCA of Central New York’s new mobile outreach initiative, and the energy from day one was amazing!

We kicked things off at Pioneer Homes, where kids in the neighborhood dove right into the fun. There were hula hoops spinning, jump ropes flying, and balls bouncing everywhere as kids played catch and invented their own games. Board games like Jenga and arts and crafts stations were full of creativity and laughter. One of the biggest hits? A giant rainbow parachute that brought everyone together in colorful, cooperative play. Families also stopped by to take a break from the heat and cool down in the Coffee House, where kids enjoyed popsicles and some spontaneous games of hide and seek.

One young participant lives right across the street and shared that this was her very first time visiting the Coffee House and she had a blast playing with other kids. Moments like these are exactly what Y on the Fly is about: creating connections, building community, and making space for fun and discovery right in the heart of our neighborhoods.

Our team will be out weekly through August 27, and each stop is designed to serve the unique needs of youth, families, and seniors. Here's where you can find us:

  • Tuesdays at Pioneer Homes, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays at Vinette Towers, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays at James Geddes Housing, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

“Y on the Fly is all about meeting people where they are,” said Lesley Wilcox, Associate Vice President of Strategy and Growth. “We’re excited to bring the Y experience right into neighborhoods, making it easier for families and seniors to stay active, feel connected, and access the support they need.”

We can’t wait to keep the momentum going and to see even more smiles, movement, and connection in the weeks ahead. Come join us and be part of the fun!
