AspireNY | Advancing Aspirational Masculinity

Aspirational Masculinity is a philosophical approach to working with boys and men developed by former Syracuse University quarterback, Don McPherson. This innovative approach is a paradigm shift in the work to engage boys and men, focusing on what we want and hope for boys and men, promoting a positive and “Deliberate and Intentional” examination of male identity and the relationships among boys and men. The goals center on individual and collective growth across the lifespan encouraging lives that are “Authentic, Whole and Evolving” (AWE).

Aspire New York is designed as a community experience and identifies the social ecosystem to accelerate and maximize the impact of policy and education, enabling programs to reach beyond unique settings and promote intersecting goals and expectations.  Central to the Aspirational Masculinity approach is the shift from “Prevention to Promotion” of an aspirational goal that allows for common and consistent language throughout the social ecosystem.

Aspire New York teaches “Excellence and Advancement” through the ecosystem using common language, goals and expectations for individuals and organizations. The Aspirational Masculinity model focuses on helping boys and men live in AWE by teaching excellence in oneself and the ability to positively contribute to the ecosystem and advancement is preparing for transitions and serving as translators of a sustainable conversation.

This presentation of Aspire New York is a partnership between the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Don McPherson. The YMCA is the ideal community partner, and we are thrilled to bring this initiative to the YMCA of Central New York.
