Lifeguard Recertification Update

The YMCA of Central New York recently learned that several lifeguard recertification classes offered through our association did not meet the American Red Cross’s required instructional standards and the person responsible for the issue is no longer working for our Y. In coordination with the Red Cross, some certifications were made invalid. This issue has now received some media coverage, and we want to affirm that all individuals affected by this situation have been contacted directly and are currently working through the recertification process with our full support. Our priority continues to be the safety of our aquatic facilities and the well-being of our staff and community.

In response to this situation, we acted swiftly:

  • We’ve already offered six recertification classes and have an additional six scheduled, totaling 12 classes to be completed by August 2.
  • Over 71 individuals have either completed or are scheduled to complete their recertification at this time.
  • We are committed to offering additional classes until everyone affected can recertify.
  • All recertification classes are being provided at no cost to participants to ease the burden this situation has caused.
  • It’s easy to register either online or through any YMCA branch location.

We’ve communicated directly with all impacted individuals and are also coordinating with local and state health departments to ensure all facilities remain in full compliance and are safe for use.

The individual responsible for the classes in question is no longer employed with the YMCA of Central New York. We are reviewing our internal procedures and instructor training standards to ensure this does not happen again.

Additionally, for those who were unable to recertify with us for any reason, we issued refunds so they could attend a class elsewhere. In cases where individuals experienced financial hardship or wage loss, we also provided additional support.

The YMCA of Central New York is deeply committed to ensuring our lifeguards are confident, prepared, and fully certified to maintain the highest safety standards across our aquatic programs.
