January is a time when a lot of people are thinking about wellness, but not everyone knows where to start, or feels like traditional fitness spaces are built for them. At the YMCA of Central New York, we focus on accessible wellness, meaning wellness that meets people where they are.
That can look very different depending on the person. For some, it’s working one-on-one with a personal trainer to regain mobility after surgery or manage conditions like arthritis. For others, it’s having access to inclusive programs through our Access & Ability services, where modifications and extra support help everyone feel welcome. We also offer smart strength equipment like EGYM, which takes the guesswork out of working out by automatically adjusting to your ability and tracking progress safely overtime. That’s been a game changer for people who are new to strength training or returning after time away.
Group exercise is another big part of accessible wellness at the Y. Our instructors are trained to support different abilities and comfort levels, and for days when people need to stay home, we offer live, hybrid virtual classes with familiar local instructors and faces.
Sometimes, it’s important to set a clear goal like running your first 5k or improving your triathlon time. We have coaches and programs that can provide guidance and accountability for athletes at any level. And whether someone’s goal is moving with less pain, recovering strength, or training for a race, the Y is here to provide encouragement, and community because wellness should be possible for everyone, not just a few.
Many are often focused on fitness in January, but the Y is here to support other goals as well! Our creative writing classes, studio art programs, and music lessons can support mental health, help folks develop a new talent, and help them find a new circle of friends. Volunteer opportunities can help folks find their own place in the community while giving back.
Finally, we know that cost can be a barrier. That’s why we offer Membership For All income-based financial aid thanks to our generous donors. Additionally, you can join the Y for a flat fee of $26 for the month of January until the 20th!
Wellness doesn’t have to be intimidating or one-size-fits-all. At the YMCA of Central New York, accessible wellness means support, flexibility, and community, so everyone has the opportunity to feel better, move better, and live healthier.
